The Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers tied at 17-all on a third-quarter field goal, and the teams moved to within four points with 2:17 left in the fourth quarter.
The 49ers were on the verge of scoring, but were blocked on fourth-and-2 from their own 28-yard line.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who had been in control for most of the game, was fired after the third quarter.
“I’m very proud of our team, our coaches and our players, but I know that we can do more,” Fisher said.
“The game is still very close and it’s a tight game.
It’s going to take a lot of courage, but we’ve got a great group of guys in that locker room. “
It’s not going to be easy.
It’s going to take a lot of courage, but we’ve got a great group of guys in that locker room.
We know what we can and can’t do.”
The 49er defense held the Rams to a field goal of their own after giving up 14 unanswered points during a 20-0 run that ended in the final minute.
The Rams led 24-13 at halftime.
“We’re just playing with passion,” Rams running back Marshawn Lynch said.
The victory gave the Rams a three-game winning streak to open the season and their fifth in eight games.
The win extends the Rams’ win streak to five games.
“Tonight, we fought,” Fisher told the team after the game.
“Our players showed up, our staff showed up.
We knew it was going to come down to us.
But they did a great job tonight.
It was a tremendous performance.”
The Rams went up by seven points with 1:02 left in regulation before running out the clock.
That gave the 49ers a 24-17 lead with 5:13 left in OT.
After the 49er kicker made a 24 yarder from the 1 with 0:45 left in overtime, the Rams drove 66 yards on three plays.
That led to a 49er field goal by Jameis Winston.
The game went into overtime on the next play, and with the score tied 24-24, Winston made a 41-yard field goal.
“This game was very important for us to have a win,” Rams linebacker Bruce Irvin said.
Fisher’s team is 1-1 when it loses a regular-season home game and 3-1 on the road.
The two teams are tied for fourth in the NFC West with two weeks remaining.
The winning streak ended a streak by the 49s to start the season by winning six consecutive games.
