They’re not new to our diets, but they’re definitely on the rise in the health department.
The smoked-salmon spreads have been around for some time, but these days, they’re getting a lot of attention.
They’re popular for their health benefits and low cost.
The main problem with smoked salmon is that they contain trace amounts of mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause liver and kidney damage.
But a new study suggests that the spread could help us lower our mercury intake and even help us live longer.
The study, published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, looked at 721 people and found that a dose of smoked salmon could reduce the amount of mercury we ingest.
The dose of the fish in the study ranged from 3 to 11 grams, but the group that consumed the lowest amount of salmon had a 33 percent reduction in mercury.
That translates to a reduction of just a couple milligrams per day for the average adult.
The researchers also found that the reduced mercury in the fish could help our bodies regulate our blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels.
And because smoked salmon contains about 0.3 grams of mercury per gram of cooked salmon, a lower intake could be a lifesaver for people with high blood pressure and diabetes.
“Our findings support the notion that smoked salmon consumption may reduce exposure to mercury and help reduce the risk of developing liver or kidney damage,” lead study author Dr. Daniel G. Dias of the University of Maryland said in a statement.
The results of the study were based on blood samples from people between the ages of 18 and 69 who were part of the Health Professionals Follow-up Study.
The participants in the group who consumed the most smoked salmon had lower concentrations of the toxic mercury, and those who ate the least smoked salmon also had lower mercury.
In other words, the more salmon we eat, the less mercury we need to consume.
The more fish we eat the less the mercury in our diet will be absorbed.
The team is also hopeful that smoking salmon will reduce our risk of chronic disease, as smoking increases our risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.
But the researchers caution that more research is needed to see if smoked salmon can prevent or treat any diseases.
It’s hard to know how effective a low-dose of smoked fish can be, because we’re not really sure what the effects are on people.
