More than 40 people were killed in a shooting spree that paralyzed the city’s central business district, a citywide lockdown and a federal indictment accusing a police officer of planting evidence to frame him.
The Justice Department has charged Officer Michael McGrath, an eight-year veteran of the Cleveland police department, with racketeering and obstruction of justice, federal officials said in a statement.
A federal grand jury indicted McGrath on two counts of obstruction of federal investigation and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, prosecutors said.
McGrath has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Cleveland on Monday.
Mcgrath is the second officer to be indicted in connection with the killing of a Cleveland police officer.
In January, an Ohio grand jury returned an indictment against the police officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy.
In February, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and other city leaders signed an agreement that called for a federal investigation into the killing and agreed to pay $2 million in damages.
