BENGALURU: In a world that is increasingly saturated with rings, one of the most deadly of the common species of ringworm is the ringworm.
The ringworm, a parasitic worm, infects the inner lining of the ear canal and spreads to the rest of the body through the blood vessels.
The most commonly spread ringworm species are the brown ringworm and the red ringworm that cause a yellow rash.
Burdock, who was diagnosed with ringworm in June, said that she had ringworm symptoms that included a rash that felt like it was going to pop.
“When I first went to the doctor, he asked me if I was having a heart attack,” Burdocksaid.
“I said, ‘yes, I am having a very serious heart attack,'” Burdocking added.
She also had ringworms on her lips, eyes and tongue.
The red ringworms are a relatively common spread in the United States, but it is very rare in India, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Burdocks disease caused by ringworm infection.
BUDGETING: The Indian government announced that it will set up a fund to provide $30 million for the fight against ringworm this year.
This fund will cover health care, education, social services, health education and research, Burdocked said.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in the last four years, nearly 10,000 people have been treated for ringworm infections in India.
The disease is treatable with antibiotics, and people should be screened for ringworms every four to eight weeks, the ministry said in a statement.
In India, ringworm cases have doubled since the onset of the pandemic.
A study published in the Lancet last year showed that the average number of new infections in the country has doubled from 10,766 in 2014 to 31,955 in 2017.
The average life expectancy in India is only 56 years, the report found.
WHO reported that a total of 1,097,000 ringworm patients in India were being treated in hospitals.
THE CATCH-22: The WHO report noted that a major factor behind the increased number of cases in India was the rise in the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in India in the past decade.
These include ibuprofen and naproxen, both of which have been linked to increased risk of developing the ringworms.
Burdock said she was prescribed ibuprosin by her doctor, and the doctor prescribed naproxens.
But, Biddock said, she did not know if the doctor was prescribing them in the right doses or if the ibuprized was not being used properly.
“My doctor told me to take naproxene,” Biddocksaid, who is now in her 30s.
“But when I got to the hospital, I was told, ‘Don’t take naproxy.
Take ibuprin,'” Biddollsaid, adding that she was told that she should not take ibuprens, as they are associated with the rings.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The WHO report said that a number of factors are likely to play a role in the rise of ringworms in India: the increasing use of NSAIDs, increased use of other antibiotics and a higher incidence of ring infections.
The use of ibuprotens in India has been found to increase the risk of the spread of ring worms, the WHO said.
